British Georgian Mameluke Sabre. Indian Wootz Steel Blade. Circa 1800. #2407010. This Mameluke sabre dates to the reign of King George III (1760-1820) and has an Indian wootz (crucible) steel “trophy” blade. The use of Mameluke sabres by British officers became popular in the late 18th Century after the defeat of the Tipu Sultan in 1799. Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington fought in the campaign against the Tipu sultan and was a proponent of the efficacy of Mameluke sabres.Indian wootz steel is high in carbon as a result of first removing the impurities in the heated metal by repeatedly hammering out, folding and re-hammering the raw iron. Carbon is then added by re-heating the iron in a crucible with wood chips. At an extremely high temperature the metal absorbs the carbon from the burnt wood. The resulting high carbon steel is then forged into billets that have a fine-grained appearance. These billets can then be forged into blades of superior quality that hold a fine edge. The grain pattern within the steel is a result of repeated folding and hammering of the heated metal to uniformly distribute the carbon throughout the steel. Its aesthetically pleasing grain is a byproduct, and not the main intention as is seen in modern forged, highly decorative blades. The 740mm curved blade has a flat spine and terminates in a hatchet point. The blade is un-fullered and single edged. The edge remains very sharp and has four small use-related nicks. The grain of the steel is faint and more visible in some areas than others. The blade is in very good condition and is free from rust and tarnish. The ivory hilt is engraved with chevrons and a fan-like centre piece. The ivory grip scales are held firmly in place by rivets with decorative domed caps. One cap is missing. The ivory is in good condition with only a small crack on the left-hand scale. The langueted steel cross-guard is in good condition and free from rust. There is some small movement of the blade in the hilt, something that is common with antique Mameluke sabres. The sabre is complete with its steel scabbard with twin suspension rings. The scabbard is in very good condition and is free from rust and damage. The sword sheaths and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard. This is an excellent example of an early 19th Century fighting Mameluke sabre. The sword would have been carried by an officer either serving in or recently returned from India.UK ivory submission #CCLKPVEJ Was: £1,250.00Now:

Or high grade showa-to with a Nioi oil tempered blade, hamon unusual Hosho Suguha, no grain visible, a very clumsy looking sword, not in good polish. Spanish sword with French trophy blade. This interesting sword combines the hilt of a Spanish 1796 pattern Heavy Cavalry sword with a modified French Cuirassier sword. The Spanish were one of the first European countries to adopt specific standardisation for their military swords. They were authorised by the Royal Ordinance of the 12th of July of 1728 for all Spanish Cavalry of the Spanish Empire. There were a few evolutions in these standards; 1728 established a butterfly cup hilt and broadsword blade for the cavalry. 1768 established a separate backsword for dragoons. The 1796 policy adopted the bell guarded hilt as the new cavalry standard. Several example are exhibited in the Museu Militar in BarcelonaThe sword is emblematic sword of the Napoleonic period. A straight bladed double fullered Cuirassier sword stamped with the "M" under a circle/star of Controleur 1re Classe Jean-Jacques Mouton (23 nov. 1793- 21 feb 1809) The blade has been modified, with one of the sides ground down and sharpened to provide a cutting edge. Overall the blade has also been shortened and the tip re-profiled.

English Civil War / Restoration Period Officers’ Walloon Sword. English Walloon Swords were mainly produced from the second to the fourth quarters of the 17th century. The pierced guard plates which are typical of the hilt design were influenced by earlier developments in Europe, which were combined with the features of existing English sword styles, to create this  form of English hilt. English Walloons were in use throughout the English Civil War period, the Restoration period, and in the battles fought during the Glorious Revolution of 1688 when James II was deposed. Most usually these are cavalry swords mounted with single edged blades. This example has a double edged blade. The hilt is made up of slender rounded bars built upon a sturdy quillon block. The cross bar is extended into a rear quillon which terminates in a swollen  wristguard. To the front, the quillon is extended into a knuckle bow, the flat grooved terminal of which is tucked into an aperture located at the front lower part of the pommel. Robust oval ring guards are mounted on each side of the cross bar, each with decorative bisected pairs of square shapes in the outer middle. Each ring is filled with a slightly downwardly convex plate, intricately engraved and pierced with concentric oval designs. The plates are integral in the manufacture of the ring guards rather than of separate manufacture sprung into place in grooves chiselled around the insides of the rings. The sprung plates are a later European development rarely present on English swords of this time. The knucklebow has two subsidiary bars emanating from near the base which join with the edges of the ring guards to strengthen the hilt structure. The hilt floor has a raised platform on the inside which supports the grip. The slightly flattened oval pommel has a fluted top with an integral raised button and a flared neck beneath. The slightly baluster shaped wooden grip is bound with  twisted brass wire and has woven Turks Heads top and bottom. The plain blade is of slender diamond section. The overall length of the sword is 38.5 inches ( 98 cm) and the blade is 32.75  inches (98 cm) long. Overall the sword is in firm lightly pitted condition. For further information on English Walloon swords, and to see similar examples, see Stuart C Mowbray, “British Military Swords – Volume One: 1600 to 1660”, Mowbray Publishing, 2013, pages 246 to 254. See also for further discussion, Cyril Mazansky, British Basket Hilted Swords, Boydell Press 2005, Chapter 11, pages 281 to 284. The swords are described as “Hilts based on pierced side rings”.

attractive French Steel Hilted Small Sword of the mid 18th century. An attractively pierced and chased French steel hilted small sword dating to the years preceding the French Revolution. It is a nicely balanced example mounted with an oval convex shell guard hilt and a hollow ground triangular section blade engraved with foliate panels at the forte. The hilt retains elements of its original blued finish which contracts nicely with the silver wrapped grip. The sword is an example of the high standards of design and craftsmanship  required of the 18th century French sword maker. The level of detail achieved in the hilt from such a hard material like steel is an impressive artistic  accomplishment. The shell guard is skillfully chiselled and pierced with a complex lattice of florets in the French manner within a thickened rim of four crescents.  The ricasso, pas d'ane rings, knuckle bow, quillon and pommel are decorated in the same sumptuous manner which attests to the homogeneity of the parts. The grip consists of a wooden rectangular section baluster-shaped core spirally wrapped with bands of flat silver strip separated by contra twisted thin ropes of silver wire and mounted with silver woven “Turk's Heads” top and bottom. The stiff blade tapers acutely to its point and is enhanced with engraved panels of foliate scrolls near the hilt on both sides. The sword is in good condition overall.  The hilt retains its original pleasing shape, shows little wear and no noticeable damage or repairs. The engraving is crisp. There is some wear and blackened age staining to parts of the blade, which is straight and undamaged.  The sword is well balanced in hand. The blade is 32.75 inches (83 cm) long and overall the sword is just under 39.5  inches (100 cm) long.

Scottish Black Watch Staff-Sergeants Mk II Broadsword. MOLE.. This Victorian Black Watch staff-sergeant's Mk II broadsword was made by Robert Mole. The basket's quillon is stamped with the regimental designation of The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). The 825mm double-edged (broadsword) blade is 34mm wide at the ricasso. The blade has a short central fuller beginning at the forte and terminates in a spear point. The blade retains its service sharpened edges. From January 1898, the War Department required that staff-sergeants’ swords be sharpened to a thickness of 0.01 inches in the factory, and that additional sharpening be carried out regimentally when on active service. It is likely that this sword was sharpened for service in the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). The 2nd Battalion of the Black Watch arrived in South Africa on the 13th November 1899 and played a significant role in the fighting. The blade is in great condition with very minor and scattered spots of tarnish. The ricasso is stamped with a Broad Arrow, a Birmingham factory inspection mark and a bend test X. The obverse ricasso bears the date 1897. The spine of the ricasso is stamped with the makers’ name, MOLE. The obverse of the ricasso spine bears a crowned inspection stamp. The regulation iron basket-hilt is composed of rounded bars united by heart-pierced junction plates. The shagreen wrapped grip is in great condition and the twisted copper wire is intact and tight. The basket retains its red felt-covered leather lining. The blade is firm in the hilt. The front of the quillon is stamped with 2 R. H. over the numeral, 9. The 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), weapon/issue number 9. The obverse of the quillon bears a Birmingham reissue stamp and the date 1 '13, suggesting that this sword may have also seen service in WW1.The sword is complete with its black leather scabbard with iron fittings and twin suspension rings. The mouth of the locket is stamped with the matching designation, 2 R. H. over 9. The iron furniture is in good condition with a speckled patina and very shallow pitting. The leather is in great condition and the stitched seam is intact. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard. This is an excellent example of a scarce Black Watch staff-sergeants’ MK II pattern basket hilted broadsword that saw service in the Anglo-Boer War.This broadsword is for sale from my private collection and as such can not be purchased directly from the website.
