WW2 Japanese Army Gunzoku (Military Civilian Employee) Officer’s Gendaito Hand Forged Katana Long Sword Smith Signed Tang ‘Kane Tsune’ Scabbard With Campaign Leather Cover & Expert Assessment. ED 2414 -. An original late WW2 Japanese Officer’s Sword and Scabbard. The sword has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of his hand written notes and illustrations accompany the sword. In extracts from his notes he states “Civilian sword for military use by Gunzoku (civilians employed by the army). They wore uniform and were entitled to carry swords. 65cm Gendaito hand forged blade (says forged in Mei in inscription). Signed by its maker ‘Kane Tsune’, born in 1910 real name Nishimura Kazufumi. He worked as a gunto smith in Giffu. This is the only mention I can find of him cannot find any other Oshigata of him. The blade is in good old polish with only one chip in edge. A very unusual hamon which does not conform to standard types. Appears a bit wild and uncontrolled in places. Hada is also a bit wild with large patches of vivid O Itame. It does not appear to have had yakote line in point. Possible war time polish. Saya is wood withthin layer of lacquer covered in campaign leather cover worn in places. Tsuba soft metal showa period made . Lost its original seppa, leather put in place. Tsuka hilt very good quality han dachi mounts looks Meiji & good menuki. Very dirty brown binding intact. Missing a sarute loop for rank tassel. An interesting example of a civilian sword carried to war (see Markus Sesko books on Japanese Smiths page 294 re smith. Only man using these kanji in Showa period (war time) born 1910 worked as a gunto smith)”. In his illustrations Bill translates the signature on the tang. He describes the tang end as Kuri Jiri (rounded) cutting edge 65cms total length 85cms. He describes the hamon as based on suguha medium Nioi crystals of Martensite, grain mixed masame goes into O (large) Itame in patches. He also identifies paint Arsenal assembly marks on the tang and other blade characteristics that can be seen in the images. The price includes UK delivery. ED 2414

English Silver Gilt Hilted Small Sword hallmarked for 1779 by Charles Freeth of Birmingham. An interesting Small Sword by Charles Freeth of Birmingham. Freeth was an accomplished silversmith working from the end of the third quarter of the 18th century until the beginning of the 19th. He is best known for the exquisite silver mounts he produced for the most high profile London and Birmingham gunmakers in the early part of this period. Swords by Freeth are rare. This sword has a plain hilt covered in gilt now lightly worn at the edges to reveal the silver beneath in some parts. The guard is an oval slightly concave plate. The guard bar section consists of a quillon block from which the rear quillon projects with a flattened downward facing globular terminal and a knuckle bow which extends upwards at the front with a diamond shaped swelling in the middle. The top of the bow is fashioned as a tooth which hooks into an aperture in the pommel to stabilise the structure. A pair of pas d'ane rings project from the base of the block whilst a collar above forms the base to the grip. The tall ovoid pommel has an integral button on top and a flared neck beneath. The slightly baluster profile wooden grip is of rectangular section and bound with contra-twisted silver roped wire interspersed with silver riband. The hollow ground, triangular section, tapering blade, is engraved with a panel of scrollwork at the forte now worn due to the friction of drawing and sheathing the sword in its scabbard when it was present. The hilt is profusely marked with Charles Freeth's incused stamp of “C F” in raised relief inside a panel, plus the date and Birmingham hallmarks on the pommel, knuckle bow and dish guard. The blade length is 30.5 inches (77.5 cm) and the overall length of the sword is just over 37 inches (just over 94 cm). Overall the sword is in good condition. The pommel has an area of light scratches on one side.

An elegant early 18th century English silver hilted small sword mounted with a single edged blade of military type. The hilt is by the London silversmith and cutler John Carman (I). The hilt is of the early plain form which replaced the rapier in the late 17th century. The hilt consists of a convex double shell guard with a boldly moulded strengthened brim. The ricasso is of rounded rectangular section from which the quillon and knucklebow extend from the top and the d’ane rings which  terminate between the juncture of the two shells.  The knuckle bow terminates in a swollen finial with a hook which is tucked into an aperture in the pommel to secure the structure. The oval shaped pommel has an integral waisted button on top and neck beneath. The mark is recorded in Arthur G Grimwade, “London Goldsmiths 1697 – 1837 Their Marks and Lives”, Faber & Faber 1976, page 92, mark 1190. The mark is stamped into the brim of one of the shell guards and into the knuckle bow on one side. The first John Carman is recorded as an apprentice of another London based silver hilted sword maker, Thomas Vicaridge, and on completion of his apprenticeship was admitted to the freedom of the Cutlers’ Company on 19th April 1716, He was dead by 1743 and was succeeded in his business by his son John Carman (II). The overall length of the sword is just over 36 inches (91.5 cm). The hilt is sturdy and has maintained its pleasing shape. There is a small dent at the top of the pommel near the button. The blade has a mottled blackened patination in parts and has slight damage near the tip.

**NAPOLEONIC WARS ERA**MATCHING MAKER**Georgian British 1796 Pattern Officer’s Private Purchase Quality Light Cavalry Sword By Woolley & Co Birmingham & Scabbard By Woolley & Co Birmingham. Sn 23174:27 -. Woolley of Birmingham produced their 1796 pattern sabres especially for the looming 100 Days War in March and April 1815, after the Congress of Vienna declared Napoleon an outlaw after his escape from his first exile to the Elba, and the Allies mobilised their armies accordingly. This is an original British 1796 Pattern Officer’s Private Purchase Quality Light Cavalry Sabre with Scabbard both by Woolley & Co Birmingham. These Sabres were primarily used by British Light Dragoons and Hussars during the Napoleonic Wars. The blade is remembered today as one of the best of its time and has been described as the finest cutting sword ever manufactured in quantity. Officers of the famous 95th Rifles, Light Infantry Regiments and the "flank" Companies of Line Regiments adopted these Swords (The Hit Napoleonic War, Book & TV series Sharpe’s Rifles featured this pattern of Sword). Pattern 1796 Sabres were used at The Battle of Waterloo 1815. This example has a single edged, fullered 32 ¾” Sabre blade (38” overall). The blade has some staining and rubbing consistent with age but no rust and the cutting edge has no nicks. The blade has its original leather hilt washer. The spine of the blade is signed ‘Woolley & Co’. Its cross guard with rounded langets, knuckle guard, pommel are in good order. The wood grip has lost some of its leather covering through the ages but there is no damage & the wire binding is tight, complete & intact. The Sabre is complete with its original steel scabbard with 2 hanging rings. The scabbard has even patina with no cracks and just a few small dents to be expected. The scabbard has an engraved roundel with the maker’s name ‘Woolley & Co Birmingham’. The lack of Board of Ordnance marks indicates that this sword & scabbard are an Officer’s Private Purchase piece. British "dog’s head" hanger. A British "Dog’s Head" or "Monster Head" Hanger c1690.
