Description ( Item Id: 1299403 )
The legendary kamikaze (divine wind) special attack corps was formed from volunteer piolts who deliberately crashed their planes or Okhas (piloted bombs) into enemy shipping. The first operational attack occured on 25 October 1944 and continued until their suspension before the surrender. The overall military effect was minimal but¸despite high Japanese losses¸ they achieved great psychological success by terrifying allied naval personnel. A kamikaze pilot could¸ if he wished carry a small aikuchi ( a dagger without a guard) to cut his jugular vein during the last moments before hitting the target. It is doubtful if he ever had time. The daggers are traditional in appearance with a slightly curved¸single-edged and often fullered blade¸ mass-produced or hand-forged but always fitted with a habaki (blade collar)
